The Connecticut Cabaret Theatre is pleased to announce its production of Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize Winning rock opera RENT. Proudly sponsored by J.P. JEWELERS in Plainville. ( RENT based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part. Kris McMurray, Artistic Director and Producer, has assembled an outstanding cast of young, energetic and powerfully talented performers from all over the state of Connecticut, most of which are making their Connecticut Cabaret Theatre debut. Ian Starr plays the role of Mark Cohen, a struggling documentary filmmaker and best friend of "Roger Davis", an HIV-positive musician who is recovering from heroin addiction played by James McKirdy. Blanca Ayala is Mimi Marquez; a sexy HIV-positive stripper and dancer who is also a heroin junkie and Roger's love interest. Kara Neilsen plays a spunky performance artist Maureen Johnson, who is Mark's ex-girlfriend and current girlfriend of Joanne Jefferson, a tough, headstrong Harvard-educated lawyer played by Jennifer Ireland. Tom Collins, the HIV-positive philosophy teacher, friend and former roommate of Roger, Mark, and Maureen is played by Marques Ruff (Garth West, understudy). Matthew Collin Marrero is cast in the role of Angel Schunard, an HIV-positive Drag Queen with sass, a heart of gold and Tom Collins' love interest. Benjamin "Benny" Coffin III, played by Jonathan Escobar is the former friend and landlord of Mark, Roger and Mimi's apartment. Together these performers create the spark needed to set this show on fire. The rest of the amazing cast includes: Erica Bryan, Kelly Lucas, Alaina Monts, Stephanie Paul, Raven Turner, Rachel Ullrich, Justin Guglielmetti, Toby Henst and James J. Moran. Kris McMurray's creative directing team include Rebecca Francis, Musical Director and Matthew Collin Marrero and James J. Moran, Assistant Directors.
